This Benin Bronze figure is one of 11 in the world, one of which is behind a glass case in a Philadelphia museum, the Barnes Foundation. This figure represents an Official in the Obas court. After the 1897 "Punitive" Expedition and Massacre, this and other Benin Bronzes were collected by Albert Barnes at least 30 years later. After looking through photographs taken by the British Lt Burrows, a man who was integral in photographing many images post-Expedition, it is pictured amongst other looted Standing Figures as well. British raiders sold and traded these precious Benin Bronzes immediately after putting an end to the Benin Kingdom at that time. Today, many Western Museums are finally starting the process of repatriation of these stolen pieces back to their homes in Nigeria due to the unending work of organizations such as the National Commission for Museums & Monuments (NCMM) and others.
